Summit Sessions

by Nick Kingstone

We recently opened the Climbing Centre at Whenua Iti which has been generously supported by Tūpiki Trust, Tasman District Council and the Lotteries Commission (DIA).

We’re now launching WIO ‘Summit Sessions’ which are a chance to experience indoor climbing in a supportive, professionally guided environment while not being on a WIO programme. Summit Sessions are no-cost, 1.5 hour climbing blocks designed for people who want to challenge themselves, learn new skills, and enjoy the unique experience of climbing in a purpose-built facility surrounded by the Whenua Iti landscape. Whether you are new to climbing or simply curious to give it a go, these sessions offer a safe and welcoming introduction.

Each session is run by qualified instructors who will guide participants through the fundamentals of climbing, including safety systems, equipment use and movement on the wall. Our team focuses on building confidence as well as technique, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to challenge themselves at their own pace.

Secure your place

To maintain a safe climbing environment, Whenua Iti Outdoors operates strict instructor-to-climber ratios in line with our operational policies. Because of this, Summit Sessions have limited spaces and must be booked in advance. Participants who attend the Summit Sessions climb for free.

Please note: these sessions are not a ‘turn up and sign up’ type of activity. Participants who arrive without a confirmed place will not be able to join the session.

If you are interested in the Summit Sessions we recommend securing your place today. Maps, directions, and arrival information can also be found below to help you plan your visit.

What happens on arrival?

Once your place is confirmed, simply arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled session time so you can find a park and get yourselves to the Climbing Centre for the briefing. A member of our team will meet participants on arrival and direct you to the Climbing Centre where the instructor will begin with a short safety briefing before the climbing session starts. All necessary climbing equipment will be provided.

Who can attend

Summit Sessions are suitable for a wide range of participants over 5 years of age. No prior climbing experience is required. Our instructors tailor the session to the group, allowing beginners to learn the basics while also giving more confident climbers the chance to test themselves on more challenging routes. Participants should be comfortable with light physical activity and able to follow safety instructions from instructors. Participants aged 5-16 years old require an adult to accompany them.
