Motueka Vocational Pathways is Launched

by Bree Arnott

As of November 2019, WIO will be running the first Motueka Vocational Pathways (MVP) Programme on behalf of Vision Motueka, as part of their initiative to create a more youth-friendly Motueka. MVP has been established in recognition of the challenges of transitioning into the workforce that face a number of young people once they leave school.

The programme will provide the opportunity for 8 young people from the local Motueka area who haven’t yet made the successful transition from school into the workplace, to help them develop essential workplace skills and aims to provide a pathway into the workforce by collaborating with the local business community.

The programme itself will include a mix of learning and activities designed to strengthen employability skills (as defined by the employability skills framework) and then a graduated transition into the nominated workplace over the course of 5 weeks. This will include a number of overnight expeditions and opportunity to experience many different working environments across our region. WIO will work with local employers from the outset to establish which local employers will be willing to take on a graduate of the MVP project for the summer season (and hopefully longer).

The programme has the potential to benefit both students and the business community alike, as businesses will have the opportunity to employ local young people who are ready to enter the workforce having developed the skills they need for the transition.

The Vision Motueka group have challenged Motueka to become a more youth friendly town and MVP is one strategy to achieve this goal. Having secured funding from the Rātā Foundation, Vision Motueka are allocating a large proportion of this to the MVP programme.
