3 National Parks and some of the most spectacular wilderness terrain in the world provide the perfect learning platform for land-based adventure programmes at ExpedNZ.
Choose from multi-day hiking trips through the mountains or along the stunning coastline, explore a myriad of underground cave systems, challenge yourself on natural rock faces or mountain bike remote trails and learn important wilderness survival skills. There are few locations in the world that can offer such variety of challenge and adventure against a backdrop of such a breath-taking natural environment. Our region featured heavily in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and multiple filming sites can be visited on these Journeys.
The Abel Tasman National Park is New Zealand's only coastal national park and its golden sandy beaches and clear turquoise water are best explored from the sea.
Multi-day, coastal expeditions can include sea-kayaking, waka ama (traditional Māori canoe), hiking and catamaran sailing. The National Park setting allows learning to extend beyond the activities to include environmental education, conservation management, traditional land use and traditional medicinal plants. Participants camp at many of the beach-front campsites and need to work as a team to prepare meals, cook on fires, manage personal safety and maintain a positive group culture – all expertly facilitated by the team of highly experienced instructors.
Māori are the tangata whenua (indigenous people of the land) of Aotearoa New Zealand. Māori have a rich and dynamic culture with special affinity for the natural environment,
(forests, the sea, rivers, lakes and mountains). Māori culture is a living treasure, indigenous and unique to Aotearoa New Zealand. Through their whakapapa (genealogy), Māori trace their families back to the waka that their ancestors sailed in across the vast Pacific Ocean. Cultural Connection programmes allow participants to learn along-side Māori and to explore their history, their cultural connection to the land, the sea and the environment. Many parallels can be drawn to other cultures and between traditional and modern environmental management strategies.
Kaitiakitanga means guardianship and protection. It is a way of managing the environment, based on the Māori world view, where people are closely connected
to the land and nature. Kaitiakitanga is based on this idea of humans as part of the natural world. This concept forms the basis of the Environmental Connection programmes encouraging participants to explore different challenges and potential solutions to environmental challenges both in New Zealand and overseas. Learning takes place in the environment, examining interconnection of the mountains, rivers, coastlines and ocean. Manaaki whenua, manaaki tangata, haere whakamua – Care for the land, care for the people, go forward.
